Name: Mariel, Mai, Maigoodies (people have called me all 3)
Where are you from? Downtown Jersey City
What's your favorite sneaker?
Air Jordan 1s - all time favorite
VaporMax - current favorite
Air Jordan 1s because of the story behind it. For those of you who don't know the history behind it, Michael Jordan wore these sneakers to a game and was fined for not being in uniform by the NBA. Nike took care of the costs and it was an investment that still benefits them until this day. I tend to gravitate towards people and things that shake the norm and this sneaker caught my attention immediately. Plus the sneaker design is an instant classic, there are so many different stories to tell when you're wearing them, and most importantly I can wear them with almost everything in my closet.
VaporMax is my go-to sneaker at the moment. I have the all black ones and recently purchased the Off-White collab and they go with everything. They're comfortable and I can either dress them up with a cute skirt or with boyfriend jeans and a vintage t-shirt.
What do you think of the current state of female sneaker culture?
It is definitely present more than ever. With the help of social media, there are so many females out here showing off their collection and letting everyone know that we can wear them just like the guys. I grew up a tomboy and never wore sandals and dresses like the other girls. These days I see so many females wearing sneakers and going for that "cozy girl" look and I'm not mad at it at all.
A turning point for me in sneaker culture was when I saw that Vashtie got the opportunity to design her own Jordan sneaker back in 2010 and thought this was the coolest thing ever. During the same time period, I was also a huge fan of Lily Allen, an artist from London, who was known to wear flirty dresses, doorknocker earrings, with Air Max 90s and really admired her style. I loved that female sneakerheads were starting to get some exposure.
Lastly, how do you incorporate sneakers into your daily wardrobe?
I wear sneakers every day. I am very lucky to work for a company where sneakers are the preferred footwear so I don't need to bring an extra pair of heels to the office. It's important for me to have sneakers I can wear with just about anything which is why I tend to be selective when it comes to my collection. If I can find a pair that goes well with cropped pants and a flirty dress I'm buying them.
